Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Slicker brush
  • Pin brush
  • Steel comb
  • Snood
  • Detangling spray
  • Scissors
  • Step 1:
Brush out the coat before bathing using slicker brushes, pin brushes and steel combs as needed. The objective with the Afghan Hound's coat is to keep it looking smooth and shiny. Don't brush the coat in between baths. This only tangles the coat and causes more matting. If your dog is a show dog, bathe him at least once a week.
  • Step 2:
Put a snood on the dog if he is in an area where his ears might drag through something like food in a bowl or mud. The snood keeps their ears clean and protected.
  • Step 3:
Fluff dry the dog's coat for the best look after bathing. A cage-dried coat won't look as good. As you dry, comb the hair out to its natural appearance.
  • Step 4:
Trim the hair around the feet with scissors to give them a rounded look. Trim whiskers and cheek hairs if you wish. It's unusual to trim the beard.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never clip or trim the coat of an Afghan Hound. It should remain long and silky and completely natural in appearance.
  • A detangling spray can help get out tough matting in the coat.
  • Other names for the Afghan Hound are the Baluchi Hound, Sage Baluchi, Tazi, Afghanischer Windhund, Levrier Afghan and the Lebrel Afgano.
  • Afghan Hounds have a very low tolerance for pain. This means that even small injuries can do a lot of harm.
