How to Handle Emus Without Getting Injured

Step 1:
Wait to approach an emu when it appears calm and not agitated. Emus tend to be most docile in the morning or evening.
Step 2:
Walk slowly toward the animal. Approach the emu without any food in hand, which may entice the bird to come after you to get the food.
Step 3:
Capture a bird for medical reasons, to move it elsewhere or to have it sexed, by grabbing both wings at once. This can be done safely from behind to keep the bird from injuring you with a kick or a beak. Keep a hold on the wings even if the bird begins to hop or fight. The emu will calm down shortly.
Step 4:
Lead the emu forward gently. Keep a hold on the wings as the bird walks.
Step 5:
Pick up birds that are too wild to handle by the wings. To do this safely, stand behind the emu and slide your arms under each leg. By clasping hands under the bird across the stomach, you will be able to pick up the emu. Hold on tightly and expect a few kicks. The emu will calm down quickly and allow you to carry him to his destination.
