Things You’ll Need:

  • Leash
  • Collar
  • Crate
  • Treats
  • Step 1:
The first step is to make a list of behaviors that you don't want your dog to do, like jump, steal food off the counter, beg, bark and get in the garbage.
  • Step 2:
The easiest way to deal with your dog's bad manners is to properly manage your dog's behavior. When you can watch your dog, keep it on a leash. This way when your dog jumps, tries to steal, beg or get in the garbage you can take the leash and bring your dog under control.
  • Step 3:
When you can't watch your dog a crate is a great place to put your dog for short periods of time. A crate is an excellent management tool. Many times during Thanksgiving we get busy and can't keep an eye on the dog. In a crate we don't have to worry about your dog getting in the garbage, stealing food, etc.
  • Step 4:
Teaching your dog a solid down-stay is a great command. When your dog can do a down-stay you can use it in a lot of different situations.
  • Step 5:
Don't send your dog away to a kennel when your dog can stay with you. With a little planning and effort your dog can be a welcome member.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have the whole family help you. Especially if you have a young dog.
  • If this is your dog's first Thanksgiving make sure you keep a close eye on your dog.
  • Don't leave your dog unattended.
  • Make sure your dog does not get into the garbage. After Thanksgiving dinner bring the garbage outside immediately.
