How to Have a Pet in a Small Apartment

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Buy a very small and easy to manage pet to make sure that you can take care of one. This is an especially good idea if you've never had a pet in your life before. You may feel silly buying a goldfish but the fact is an animal such as this can teach you about pets in general. The fact is if you can't find the time to feed a fish and clean out a tank, you may not be ready for the responsibility that comes with a dog or cat.
  • Step 2:
Continue to think small once you are ready for a pet such as a cat or dog. While a Golden Retriever may sound appealing to you, it's important to consider the size of your apartment. Your pet will need to move around your place without wrecking it. A Dachshund is an example of an ideal dog for a small apartment.
  • Step 3:
Keep your small apartment as clean as possible. Chances are that your pet will cause somewhat of a mess in your small apartment. Keeping plates put away instead of on your tables, for example, can prevent further messes from being made. Keeping your small apartment clean can also prevent accidents and keep your pet safe.
  • Step 4:
Allow your pet to sit with you on your furniture in your small apartment. You may get pet hair on the furniture but allowing your pet to sit with you can keep the pet better behaved. The pet will be more calm when it's sitting right next to you. Letting your pet sit right next to you or on your lap is also a great way to bond with the animal.
  • Step 5:
Place the food in a place where the pet can easily get to it yet is out of your way. You want your pet to feel comfortable when it is getting it's food and water. For example, you could place a food and water bowl under a table. A small dog or cat could get to this without knocking anything over or obstructing you in any way.
  • Step 6:
Give the pet a spot of it's own in your small apartment. Even though room is limited in a small apartment, it's still important to give the pet at least one little spot. You could lay a blanket out in a corner or next to your bed. If you have a very small dog or a cat, consider buying a basket and lining that with blankets. This is a convenient way to give your pet a bed.
