How to Help a Dog Adjust to Doggy Daycare

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Visit the doggy daycare with your dog before enrolling him. Let him see the other dogs and the workers who will be taking care of him. Most doggy daycares will allow you to visit a few times to get the dog used to the new environment.
  • Step 2:
Stay for a short period on the first day you drop him off at the daycare. This will give him some time to adjust. It's best, however, if you stay just long enough to get him acclimated.
  • Step 3:
Tell the doggy daycare owners which activities your dog is most used to. Most doggy daycares will do their best to keep your dog on the same eating and exercise schedule. Do the same activities your dog is exposed to at doggy daycare on the days he is not there. This will help make his stay at daycare much easier. Some doggy daycares will limit the number of blankets and toys you can bring from home. Ask about limitations before enrolling your dog in a specific daycare.
  • Step 4:
Leave an old shirt or other item worn by you at the doggy daycare. Your scent on the piece of clothing will make the adjustment easier. Bring your dog's favorite blanket or bed and a few toys.

Tips & Warnings

  • Doggy daycare is not for all dogs. Some dogs are simply not social and cannot adjust to the environment of a doggy daycare.
