How to Hike With Dogs

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Treats
  • Leash
  • Step 1:
The hardest part of the hike is always the first 15 minutes. Your dogs have just been released from the car and they are raring to go. If it's a safe area, and they know how to come when called, it's best just to let them run like mad and get all their fresh kinks out.
  • Step 2:
While hiking, just like on city walks, you can work with your dog on basic commands and reward him. Come, sit, stay, down--all these should be rewarded with a treat when your dog listens and obeys. This will reinforce you as leader.
  • Step 3:
Your dog will be excited to explore, so it works best to let them run, call them back, praise them and let them run again. Eventually they'll be too tired to run and will trot right alongside or behind you. Make sure to stop for breaks in shade, and offer water.
  • Step 4:
If you're hiking up a trail and you will be camping, remember that at night your dog is safest right next to you in the tent or sleeping bag.
  • Step 5:
Some indoor city dogs will get scared at night outside in a campground. If your car is nearby, consider letting him sleep in the car if he's nervously circling around the tent, keeping you awake.
  • Step 6:
Enjoy your hike! Seeing things from the excited eyes of a happy dog chasing birds and squirrels and bounding through streams can cheer up even the darkest day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have a leash with you in case you need to use it.
