How to How to Identify a Maine Coon Cat

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Measure the fur. Maine Coons are a long-haired breed. Their fur is easier to care for than one would think, considering the length. The coat has prominent tuffs at the neck and tail, which reflect the cold weather origins of the breed.
  • Step 2:
Check for mice. Maine Coons are excellent mousers. They were recognized in Maine for their abilities to rid homes of mice.
  • Step 3:
Characterize the coloration. The most common coloration for the Maine Coon is a brown tabby, possibly with white added. This breed is found in every hue outside of chocolate or lavender.
  • Step 4:
Look her in the eyes. Golden green eyes are frequently found on this breed. The White Maine Coon can have blue or mismatched eyes.
  • Step 5:
Weigh him. Maine Coons are large cats, with females weighing as much as 16 pounds with males weighing in a couple pounds more, on average. Some have been known to have a healthy weight of over 20 pounds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Maine Coons require regular brushing to keep their fur from matting.
  • The occasional bathing can be tolerated and possibly even enjoyed if you introduce it young in life.
  • Despite proper care, you should check the anus of the Maine Coon occasionally to ensure there is no excrement tangled in the fur.
