Try Booking a Guided Quail Hunt

Step 1:
Reserve your spot on a guided quail hunt.
Step 2:
Choose a basic 1-day guided quail hunt for you and your friends. The cost of such hunts can be surprisingly expensive, depending on the size of your group. Meals are often not included.
Step 3:
Opt for a weekend long hunt package. These packages usually include meals and lodging.
Step 4:
Bring your own rifle and ammunition if the company doesn't provide them. The quail hunting company will usually provide a guide and experienced hunting dogs, however.

Consider Buying a Bird Dog

Step 1:
Look for a good bird dog. Most quail hunters use at least 2 dogs to find and flush out the quail. This forces the quail into the air, instead of allowing them to just run.
Step 2:
Purchase a dog from a reputable bird dog breeder. Dogs sold through stores may have been mistreated or raised in poor conditions.
Step 3:
Hire a professional to train you dog to bird hunt. This can be a repetitive and time-consuming process, and so is best left to professionals.

Hunt Late in the Quail Season

Step 1:
Start your quail hunting after most other hunters have given up. Experts believe that late season hunting can be the most exciting and most successful.
Step 2:
Head for snowy areas. Once snow has fallen, quail have much fewer areas of scrub brush to hide in. Often, quail will avoid the snow altogether, which keeps them more visible to you and your dogs.
Step 3:
Keep quiet. Quail that have survived until later in the hunting season are more suspect of noise. Don't use a whistle for your dog, and keep your footsteps light to avoid spooking the birds.
Step 4:
Hunt off the beaten path. Take a different route than you would at the beginning of the hunting season. After several weeks of being hunted, quail will move to nearby but different feeding grounds.

Tips & Warnings

Hunt quail in the early morning. Experts believe that dogs can best flush out quail in the humidity of the early morning hours.

Don't put your dead quail in the same bag right away. Hang each bird by a separate piece of twine to let them cool down. This prevents bacterial build up.
