How to Hunt Quail

Things You’ll Need:

  • 20 or 28-gauge shotgun with steel or brass shot
  • Bird dogs
  • Hunter's orange
  • Step 1:
    Prepare all weapons for hunting and ensure all are maintained and in safe working order. A 20-gauge is the most common choice of quail hunters, yet the 28-gauge shotgun is gaining popularity.
  • Step 2:
    Pack cool and warm weather gear and clothing to adjust to the changing environs. Brush pants or those resistant to thorns and briars are recommended. Incorporate hunter's orange into the kit.
  • Step 3:
    Allow bird dogs to flush out the quail. When "pointed," the dog will remain still to allow the hunter the opportunity to mount his shotgun. All guns should be held skyward until a shot can be made.
  • Step 4:
    Never cross any other hunter's line of fire while swinging the shotgun to aim. Each hunter should have his or her own "lane" in which to shoot targets.

Tips & Warnings

  • Walk through tall switch grass or overgrown fields where quail are abundant.
  • Watch the bird dogs closely, and follow their lead. Stay behind the dogs, and never shoot below the horizon to prevent accidentally injuring the dogs.
  • Never use lead shot as lead can poison the meat. This may lead to lead poisoning in humans.
  • Call the dogs off any animal that may pose a threat to the animal. Some bird dogs have been bitten by snakes and even foxes during a hunt.
