How to Identify Barbados Blackbelly Sheep

Step 1:
Touch the hair on the sheep. There is no wool on these animals, just a medium or thick coat of hair. Most of the thick hair is shed during the spring and then grown back for the winter.
Step 2:
Check for color. The body of the sheep can be any color, but the underparts are black. Blackbelly sheep have black bellies that move down the inside of the legs. There are also distinctive black dots on the nose, forehead, and inside the ears.
Step 3:
Examine the ears. This breed's ears point forward from the side and never droop or hang low. They are not long and seem to always be at attention.
Step 4:
Look for caring, searching eyes. The look of concern these sheep maintain in the presence of humans, sets it apart from the other breeds who normally avoid humans.
Step 5:
Consider the overall appearance of the sheep. If it resembles a small deer or antelope, you are more than likely looking at a Barbados Blackbelly Sheep.
