How to Identify a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Look at the overall appearance of the breed. The coloration of this dog is a rich chestnut or black around the ears and eyes following on to the body with the rest of the body a pearly white. The majority of the coat is free from curl but has distinct feathering around the ears, chest, leg and tails with the feet also bearing feathering.
  • Step 2:
Appreciate the body of this breed. It is 12 to 13 inches in height and weighs in at about 13 to 18 lbs. It is a well-balanced small dog that has a squareness to the look of the body. The body is only slightly longer than it is high.
  • Step 3:
Examine the face and see that it has a sweet, gentle and melting expression. The eyes are large and round. They are set apart and have a very dark brown color. The ears are set high upon the head and well apart. The ears are long and leathery with plenty of feathering.
  • Step 4:
Check out the tail. Most dogs of this breed are not docked but if the one that you are viewing has a docked tail, it should not be docked more than one third of the tail.
