How to Identify a Somali Cat

Step 1:
Examine the coat of the cat. A Somali has a very soft double coat with hairs of medium length.
Step 2:
Determine the color of the cat. Somali are only found in two colors. The colors found are ruddy brown and red. The ruddy color is an orange brown that has black tipped hairs.
Step 3:
Look at the overall body structure of the cat. A Somali are slightly longer than the Abyssinians but are sturdy and graceful. They have a slightly arched back looking as if ready to pounce. They have strong slender legs.
Step 4:
Inspect the head of the cat. Somali's have round heads that elongate into the nose. Their ears are wide spread and always alert.
Step 5:
Look at the color of the cats eyes. Somalis have either green or golden eyes that are surrounded by a dark lid skin as if outlined with dark pencil. Their eyes are deep and expressive, even charming.
Step 6:
Feel the length of the tail. Somali's have a long and strong tail. The tail is thickly coated with fur.

Tips & Warnings

The Somali has a wild appearance overall, but is actually a very tame cat. They are often a bit skittish. They are excellent mousers and if outdoors hunt small game. They are intelligent, lively and shrewd.
