How to Identify a Springer Spaniel

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Look at the general build of the dog. Springer spaniels have a compact build with no parts out of proportion. These spaniels also feature thick, muscular legs.
  • Step 2:
Notice the size of the dog. They are larger than other spaniel breeds and stand between 19 and 21 inches tall at the shoulder. They have an average weight of about 50 pounds.
  • Step 3:
Pay attention to the dog's body parts. Springer spaniels have clipped tails, which are usually stubs 2 to 4 inches long and frequently wag. They feature either hazel or brown colored eyes.
  • Step 4:
Take note of the dog's coat. It has a medium to long length coat of flat hair which becomes wavy as it gets long.
  • Step 5:
See if the dog's color matches the proper colors of a springer spaniel. They are either black with white markings, white with black markings or tricolor. The characteristics of Tricolor spaniels include mainly black and white coloring with tan markings. The tan markings are usually found on the face and under the tail.
  • Step 6:
Observe the dog's temperament. Although the temperament may very from dog to dog, springer spaniel's are generally friendly dogs that are attentive and energetic, but not aggressive.
  • Step 7:
Go to the official springer spaniel website to see pictures of these dogs and see if they match up with the dog you want to identify.
