How to Identify an American Eskimo Dog

Step 1:
Notice the size of the dog. American Eskimo dogs vary in size more than other breeds, but the standard American Eskimo dog is always between 15 and 19 inches tall at the shoulders. It has a strong, thick build and usually weighs between 20 and 35 pounds.
Step 2:
Look at the ears and other parts of the dog. Pointy, triangular, erect ears are a characteristic of an American Eskimo Dog. The dog's tail is bushy, curled upward and usually rests off the back of the dog.
Step 3:
See if the dog's coat fits the description of an American Eskimo Dog. These dogs have long, thick, fluffy white hair which is always straight and not curled or wavy. Some can have a cream color, but white is always the dominant color and no color other than cream is ever present. Under their coat is pink or gray skin.
Step 4:
Take note of the fur around the dogs neck. American Eskimo dogs have a ruff of fur around their neck.
Step 5:
Pay attention to the nose, lips and eyes. They have black noses and lips. The rims of their eyes are also black.
Step 6:
Observe the dog's personality characteristics. They are alert and protective, but not usually aggressive. They are friendly and usually not shy.
Step 7:
