Instructions

  • Step 1:
Examine the color of the coat. This breed is always liver, brown or dark chocolate brown in color. There may also be a bit of white on the toes and chest.
  • Step 2:
Feel the coat of the dog. This breed has the uniform wave of a close curly hair. It can be thick and probably uniformly long to protect the dog from the elements and brush that the dog is required to plow through.
  • Step 3:
Watch the dog run and note that as it runs, the gait is smooth and powerful. There is no awkwardness, but is fluid. The hinds will follow each other in an almost parallel path.
  • Step 4:
Note the body structure and notice that the body is muscular and lean. It is strong and flows well around the shoulders and legs. The toes of the feet are closely grouped and webbed.
  • Step 5:
View the overall body of the dog. The American Water Spaniel is between 15 to 18 inches high and achieves weights of 35 to 45 pounds. The body is well balanced.

Tips & Warnings

  • The dog is relatively intelligent and eager to please. He appears very friendly and approachable.
