How to Identify an Australian Cattle Dog

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Look at the dog's overall appearance. The Australian Cattle Dog is a working breed with a compact body. They are muscular and athletic. Their coats are usually one of two colors, red or blue, the latter giving them their former name. Interspersed with their colored fur, they will have white hairs, creating a peppered effect.
  • Step 2:
Study the dog's facial features. His eyes will be oval and he will have a look of intelligence. His ears will be small to medium, with smaller ones being preferred in the breed. He has strong teeth, evenly spaced and a tight bite.
  • Step 3:
Take note of the dog's temperament. He will usually be emotionally well-centered, protective, but highly trainable.
  • Step 4:
Observe how the dog interacts with humans. Australian Cattle Dogs may show some suspicion around strangers, but they are very loyal to their owners. Unless the dog has a problem, you won't observe any aggressive behavior.
  • Step 5:
Watch the way the Australian Cattle Dog moves. Their strong necks and forequarters are typical of the breed and they have a powerful gait. They also have muscular hindquarters and a broad, sturdy stance. Their back is mostly flat with a slight slope in a show stance.
