How to Identify an Australian Terrier

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Take an overall look at the Australian Terrier. The general appearance of the breed is that of a self-assured and alert dog, friendly and tenacious. The alertness and eagerness to learn make teaching good behavior quite easy.
  • Step 2:
Examine the head of the dog. The eyes are dark brown to black and are very watchful. They don't want to miss a thing. The ears stand erect at the sides of their head and are triangular. The muzzle's about the same length as their skull so it stands out well.
  • Step 3:
Observe the color of the coat. Australian Terriers have coat colorations that are basically one of three colors or blends of them. They are dark blue, fierce red and tan.
  • Step 4:
Appreciate the general stature of the breed. It is a bit longer than it is high and is no more than about nine to 10 inches in height. The breed only weighs eight to 11 pounds at adult stage and has slender agile legs. The coat never reaches the ground and is usually only about six inches long. The beautiful docked tail stands out and is held upright.
