How to Identify the Rose Haired Tarantula

By Robin Noelle

Instructions

  • Step 1:
The Rose Haired Tarantula is a fairly large spider that reaches full size in adulthood, about 3 to 4 years in age. Their leg span reaches to 5 inches or 12.5 centimeters.
  • Step 2:
The body of the spider is dark brown to black but covered in fine orange-pink hairs, thus earning its name of the Rose Hair Tarantula. Both mature and immature spiders have a grayish undercoat.
  • Step 3:
Tarantulas have hard external skeletons (exoskeletons) and 8 jointed legs. The exterior of the body is covered by long, bristle-like hairs. They have 8 eyes, 2 fangs, and are venomous. The spinnerets are found on the abdomen.
  • Step 4:
The male is fuzzier than the female and has brighter colored hair. The legs are longer in male spiders while the female remains compact and bulky. The female body size is about 3 inches or 7.5 centimeters. Males have smaller bodies but the same length of legs.
  • Step 5:
It's unknown exactly how long these spiders live for but the best guess is 15+ years, with the female outliving the male by several years. In captivity, the male usually only lives 2 to 5 years while the female lives to be 12 on average.

Tips & Warnings

  • Handling the tarantula causes it to become stressed. Keep handling to brief periods.
  • Tarantula hairs can irritate skin, nose and eyes. Wear protective coverings when cleaning the habitat.
  • Tarantula bites are painful. Use caution when handling.
