How to Install an Underground Cat Fence

Things You’ll Need:

Underground cat fence kit
Wire cutters
Lawn edger or shovel

Step 1:
Determine the layout of your underground cat fence, using the diagrams and suggestions included in the kit. Basically, you'll be running a wire around the perimeter of your yard or pet area, so you need to decide how small or large an area you want to contain.
Step 2:
Roll out the wire according to the pattern you decided on, starting in the house and routing the wire through a window, door or wall. The wire will be loose upon the ground at this point; you want to complete the installation and test the underground fence before actually burying the wire.
Step 3:
Connect the two ends of the wire to the unit by sliding the wire ends into the receptacles or winding the wires around the screws, whichever pertains to the unit you purchased. Plug the unit in the wall receptacle.
Step 4:
Turn on the unit and test the collar with the tester provided in the kit. Generally, you will be walking towards the wire holding the collar at "cat level" from the ground. As you near the wire, a warning will sound. If you continue closer to the wire, a mild electrical shock will surge through the collar. The tester will light up so you don't have to actually feel the shock.
Step 5:
Bury the wire an inch or two below the surface of the yard by running a small trench with the edger and shoving the wire into the ground with a stick. Tamp the earth back down over the wire.
Step 6:
Attach the collar to your cat, making sure the unit on the collar is snug to the cat's throat. Proceed to train your cat as instructed in the underground fence directions.
