How to Interview a Pet Sitter

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Ask about past experience working with animals. Have the interviewee explain what type of setting they worked in and for how long. Discuss what skills they think they have gained that would help them as a pet sitter.
  • Step 2:
Create scenarios and ask how they would handle them. It's important to know how a pet sitter would deal with a dog that became frightened or got sick. Have them explain any animal first aid training they have received.
  • Step 3:
Discuss hours and payment. It is essential to agree on hours and salary upfront. You both want to be on the same page to avoid future misunderstandings. Explain how often you will need a pet sitter. Ask when they would be available to start.
  • Step 4:
Get recommendations. Ask for references from past employers. Be sure to follow up and contact references and ask how they rate your candidate's abilities to be a pet sitter.
  • Step 5:
Give them the opportunity to ask questions. Discuss any additional responsibilities, such as dog walking or pet grooming, you would like them to do.
  • Step 6:
Bring out your pet. Have the person that is interviewing meet your pet and watch the interaction. Give them some time to warm up to each other. Do not expect an instant bond. Instead, look for a genuine love of animals and easiness around your pet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind not all pet sitters may have experience working for someone else. A candidate who has experience with pets of their own, and seems very comfortable with your animal may be a good choice.
