Instructions

  • Step 1:
Give your new cat it's own space. Set the cat up in a room separate from most household activities are. Gradually encourage him to come out to where the rest of the family lives and plays until the cat does it out of habit.
  • Step 2:
Provide a litter box in the cat's own space. Experiment with different types of litter to find one that the cat likes.
  • Step 3:
Mix the cat food in with whatever your pet is used to eating. If you transition the cat's diet too quickly, it can cause stomach upset.
  • Step 4:
Groom your cat regularly. Take time to brush him and pet him. This provides a bonding experience and teaches the cat to trust you.
  • Step 5:
Leave cat toys and scratching posts around for the new cat to discover. A good way to introduce your cat to his new family is to play with him.
  • Step 6:
Block off some safe areas for the cat if you have small children or dogs. Cats can jump over most baby gates if they need to get away from a playful dog or a grabby child.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pay attention to your cat to see whether he's adjusting to your family. If he starts urinating outside of the litter box or seems unusually distraught, take him to a vet.
