Caring For Irish Wolfhound Puppies

Step 1:
Make sure that getting a puppy is the right thing for you and your household. Prepare your home for the new puppy and purchase all of the supplies that you will need.
Step 2:
Acquire transportation devices for the puppy. Don't just assume you can take the puppy in your car without proper restraint. As a new puppy they are going to be frightened and curious. For some, it will be their first car ride. A lack of restraint can be dangerous. Make sure you have a quality crate in which to transport your dog.
Step 3:
Visit the veterinarian first thing. This is the perfect time to get the necessary vaccinations or just to have a health check done on your new pet. Either way, it will prove to be a good orientation to the vet's office for your new puppy.
Step 4:
Follow proper feeding guidelines for your puppy. This means feeding him twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. You should feed him a healthy, high quality puppy food that has natural ingredients. If you choose to make homemade food for your dog you should try to supplement the diet with vitamins. Make sure the puppy always has a clean supply of water and check the supply frequently because puppies often knock over their water bowl.
Step 5:
Closely monitor the other pets in the home and supervise introductions. It is best to introduce the two pets on neutral ground, such as at the breeder's or the dog park. This reduces the need for the senior pet to defend its territory. Either way you will need to be patient while the introductions take place.
Step 6:
Explain the do's and don't of pet care to your children. Make sure they know how to properly treat the pet.
Step 7:
Start housebreaking your puppy once he has gotten used to his new surroundings. This will include crate- and leash training. It will take time and patience to complete all of the housebreaking.

Tips & Warnings

You need to supervise your new Irish Wolfhound puppy at all times until he has been trained and adjusted to his new surroundings.
Make sure your home and yard is properly puppy proofed before bringing your new puppy home. Provide the puppy with a lot of companionship and exercise. Place him in a crate or pen when you can't be with him. Consider obedience training.
Children and toddlers should never be given unsupervised access to a new Irish Wolfhound puppy.
