How to Keep a Cat Safe in the Car

Step 1:
Prepare travel food and water dishes. Remember to take periodic breaks to give your cat the opportunity to eat and drink.
Step 2:
Attach a name tag to your cat's collar with your phone number if she is not already wearing one. Should she get separated from you, your chances of getting her back are greater if she has a tag on. Bring a leash in case you need it, but do not leave the leash on the cat while she is in the carrier.
Step 3:
Use a large pet carrier if you are taking your cat on a long trip in the car. A larger carrier will give him more room to move around and get comfortable on the trip. It is never a good idea to let your cat be loose in the car while you are driving. She could get injured or killed.
Step 4:
Place a big comfortable pillow, or your cats favorite bed or blanket, inside the carrier to encourage him to settle down and get some sleep.
Step 5:
Put the carrier in the back seat of the car and put your cat inside of it. Never put the carrier in the front seat. If the airbag should deploy it could smother any human or animal weighing less than 60 pounds.

Tips & Warnings

Never leave your cat alone in the car. The inside of a car can heat up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit in less than 10 minutes. Your cat can suffer from heatstroke and die.
If you are traveling in the summer, install a crate fan to keep your cat cool in the car.
