Instructions

  • Step 1:
Look for visual signs. A dog that has to go usually gives several clues to show you that it's time to go outside. While all dogs are different, you can expect to see such behaviors as walking in circles or sniffing the ground; you may even notice a kink in her tail before she does the deed. Watch your puppy outdoors to see what sort of patterns you can see with your pet.
  • Step 2:
Listen. Many dogs vocalize their need to poop by barking or whining. So if your puppy begins to whine, take him out immediately.
  • Step 3:
Pay attention to the clock. Dogs are creatures of habit and like to go out at around the same time each day. This is usually right after a meal, so get into the habit of taking her outdoors right after each meal and after naps.
  • Step 4:
Let him out more often. In the beginning, it may be difficult to pick up on your puppy's cues, so when in doubt, take him out every hour or two around the clock. Eventually you and your puppy will get the hang of housebreaking and you can go on about your other business.
