Instructions

  • Step 1:
Check your local ordinances about natural gardens before you begin to landscape your yard. Some towns do not allow natural garden growth, and you may have to make an appeal to landscape a natural garden in your yard.
  • Step 2:
Tell you neighbors what you are planning to do. Show them the plants you intend to use. Also inform them that you plan to design a buffer area so any native plants won't grow into their property.
  • Step 3:
Create curved borders for a more natural appearance. Make them wide enough so that if a tall plant falls over, it doesn't lie on your neighbor's property or on the city's sidewalk.
  • Step 4:
Begin the landscape process in a small area of your yard. Switch a small portion of your yard to natural landscape each year rather than trying to do it all at once.
  • Step 5:
Plant grasses, shrubs and trees that are appropriate for your part of the country. Choose non-aggressive native plants for your natural garden.
  • Step 6:
Add pathways made of natural materials. Forget about straight pathways. Let the pathways meander instead.
  • Step 7:
Put lawn ornaments, bird baths, bird feeders and other items in inviting arrangements along your pathways. There are a vast array of natural ornaments that you can add to your natural landscape to make it uniquely yours.
