Instructions

  • Step 1:
Provide food. Each bird species has unique food requirements. These can change with the seasons and the bird's maturity. Learn the food habits of the birds you wish to attract, and provide those foods. Plant the appropriate trees, shrubs or flowers that will provide the fruits, berries, grains, seeds, acorns, nuts or nectar.
  • Step 2:
Offer adequate water supply. This step alone can sometimes double the number of birds who fly into your yard. The proper water sources can include a frog pond, water garden or bird bath. Birds will be drawn to these spots, especially if the water is dripping, splashing or moving.
  • Step 3:
Shelter the wildlife. Birds need places to hide from predators and escape severe weather. Trees--even hollow ones--shrubs, tall grass and bird houses provide safety and shelter. Strategically place bird houses, feeders and bird baths in places where birds will find safety.
  • Step 4:
Check soil and topography. Consult with a local nursery, garden center, university or county extension office to have a soil test done for your yard. Plant species usually adapt to certain soil types. Knowing what type of soil you have will help identify the types of plants that should grow best in your yard.
  • Step 5:
Lay out the area based on what is attractive to birds. Spacing plants appropriately and offering spots with both open-air and thick cover are important.
