How to Limit Liability at a Doggy Daycare

Step 1:
Check that the facilities are large enough for the dogs. Having too many dogs in a small space can lead to problems. Provide fencing that is completely enclosed. Implement employee procedures to ensure that no runaways occur.
Step 2:
Make sure there is sufficient staff to dog ratio. One staff person can handle up to five dogs.
Step 3:
Provide constant supervision when two or more dogs are in the same vicinity.
Step 4:
Offer activities to engage the dogs in play and exercise. Dogs that are bored are more likely to engage in aggressive and destructive behavior.
Step 5:
Ensure opportunities for rest during the stay. Dogs who are over-excited or tired may snap or bite.
Step 6:
Request vaccinations records. Make sure all dogs are up-to-date on their vaccinations to prevent canine/kennel cough and other contagious conditions.
Step 7:
Screen dogs before accepting them into the daycare. Have the owners fill out a questionnaire about the dog's personality to make sure that the dog is properly socialized and will fit in with other dogs.

Tips & Warnings

Create a "Release of Liability" form to protect the business. Hire a lawyer to write the release.
Require obedience classes for dogs that have a difficult time responding to commands.
Certain breeds are more aggressive than others. Consider banning certain breeds from the daycare.
