How to Load an Ostrich Into a Trailer

Step 1:
Prepare the trailer. Make certain it is enclosed so that the ostrich, if mature, cannot stick its head out. Also make certain there are no sharp objects inside the trailer on which the ostrich may injure itself while being transported.
Step 2:
Line the floor of the trailer with old rugs or carpets. This provides good traction for the ostrich as well as a soft place for it to sit while being transported.
Step 3:
Grasp the ostrich by the legs and lift it from the ground if the bird is young. Carrying the ostrich into the trailer in this manner is a simple prospect.
Step 4:
Gather at least four people to aid in handling the ostrich. Using a tool made of a handlebar attached to a rake can be useful in fending off and herding ostriches.
Step 5:
Drive, drag or carry the ostrich to the trailer. This should be fairly simple if you have managed to calm the bird with a hood.
Step 6:
Place a hood over the ostrich's head. This calms the bird, making it easier to handle. The handler who does this task should protect himself. Create a useful protective shield by cutting two holes in plywood.
Step 7:
Hire a company to transport the ostrich for you. These can be found in the phone book or online. One such company is Baronigg--Ostrich Consulting (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

An ostrich kick can be lethal if it lands wrong. These birds are dangerous and powerful, so inexperienced people should not go anywhere near them.
