How to Make Bird Feeders with Your Kids' Help

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Several pine cones that have fallen from pine trees
  • Vegetable shortening, like Crisco
  • Spatula
  • Bowl filled with bird seed
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Bird guide for your area
  • Empty Toilet Paper or Paper Towel Rolls
  • Peanut Butter
  • Spatula
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Bowl
  • Bird Seed
  • Bird Guide for your area

How to Make a Pinecone Bird Feeder with Your Kids

  • Step 1:
    Take the yarn and cut a piece of it so that you can tie it around the pine cone to use as a hanger.
  • Step 2:
    Using a spatula, spread a generous amount of shortening onto the pine cone.
  • Step 3:
    Roll the pine cone in a bowl that is filled with birdseed until it is evenly coated.
  • Step 4:
    Hang the pine cone from your tree branches for the birds to eat off of it. As the bird eat, you and your children can use the bird guide to identify the birds in your yard.

How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Bird feeder

  • Step 1:
    Take the yarn and cut a piece of it so that you can thread it through the tube to use as a hanger.
  • Step 2:
    Use the spatula to spread a generous amount of peanut butter all over the tube.
  • Step 3:
    Roll the tube in the bowl that contains the bird seed to evenly coat the tube with seed.
  • Step 4:
    Hang the tube from your tree branches for the birds to eat off of it. As the bird eat, you and your children can use the bird guide to identify the birds in your yard.
