How to Make Peanut Butter Bird Food

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

Peanut butter
Corn meal
Sunflower seeds (or other commercial bird seed preparation)
Raisins or cranberries
Nuts
Cookie crumbs or bread crumbs
Large bowl
Wooden spoon
Assorted containers, which can include mesh vegetable bags, empty grapefruit or orange rinds, pine cones or an empty coconut shell
Wire or string for hanging

Step 1:
Assemble the ingredients before beginning to make your peanut butter bird food. With the exception of the peanut butter and the corn meal, each batch can be different. You can include all of the ingredients listed for a gourmet feast, or you can put in any ingredients that you have on hand. The mixture should include one part peanut butter and three parts corn meal.
Step 2:
Using a wooden spoon, mix all of the ingredients in a large bowl. Keep folding the ingredients together until they are evenly distributed.
Step 3:
Scoop the mixture into a container. If you are using a mesh bag, just spoon the mixture into it and tie it off on the end with a string. Keep one long end of a string loose for hanging. Before filling empty citrus rinds or coconut shells, pierce them with a piece of wire that you can use to hang the filled containers outside. Just spoon the mixture into the shells until they are completely filled. Pinecones also need to be attached to wire or hanging string before filling with the mixture. If you are using pinecones as your peanut butter bird food containers, use a wide knife to spread the mixture in between the layers of the pine cone.
Step 4:
Hang the peanut butter bird food outside where the birds can easily find it and where you can watch from a window.

Tips & Warnings

If you plan to give away the peanut butter bird food as a present, you can make the mixture and fill the containers ahead of time. Cover the filled containers tightly with plastic wrap before wrapping them. These can be stored in your freezer until it is time to give them away.
