Instructions

  • Step 1:
Remove your dog from all distractions to begin this training process. Tell your dog to sit.
  • Step 2:
Hold some treats in your hand to make your dog pay attention when you say her name.
  • Step 3:
Say your dog's name. When he responds, reward him with a treat. Be sure that your dog is making eye contact with you when you say his name. Do not give out the treat if he is looking indirectly at you.
  • Step 4:
Rub your dog's head or tell your dog that she is doing a great job when she looks at you after you say her name. Don't always reward your dog with a food treat. When rewarding your dog, alternate between food treats and nice rubs.
  • Step 5:
Begin to get someone else to distract your dog when you say his name. After he has the hang of responding abruptly to his name, get someone to clap or begin to play with him. Demand respect and when he responds to his name, reward him again with kind words or treats.
  • Step 6:
Make your dog pay attention when you call her name at all times. Vary the training process in various locations and with various rewards.
