Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Basket
  • Bird Seed
  • Bird Feeder
  • Birding Supplies
  • Step 1:
Choose a basket that will accommodate the items you select. Choices range from decorative baskets to buckets or pails designed to store birdseed in.
  • Step 2:
Select an assortment of bird seeds. Consider specialty seed mixtures for the particular birds you birdwatcher attracts or desires to attract. Include a bag of black oil sunflower seeds as these are the most versatile and provide added energy for weary birds.
  • Step 3:
Provide suet feeders and variety of suet cakes. The feeders can be purchased for few dollars and the cakes to fill them are inexpensive and readily available in hardware stores.
  • Step 4:
Purchase a new bird feeder. These range in price from inexpensive plastic feeder for under $5 to high quality feeders that will last for years that may cost over $100. Choose a feeder that fits your budget.
  • Step 5:
Add a digital camera and birdwatchers binoculars to allow your bird watcher to capture images of birds. You can purchase a combination set for a little over $50.
  • Step 6:
Include a squirrel baffle. These are available wherever bird feeders are sold. Squirrel baffles are designed to prevent squirrels from accessing feeders and will prevent the damage squirrels inflict on feeders.
  • Step 7:
Include a good bird field guide. There are many available at your local bookstore to choose from. Look for one that includes colored photos, detailed bird descriptions, and field markings.
  • Step 8:
Complete the gift basket with a birdwatcher journal. National Audubon Society Birder's Journal is an excellent choice. It features informational sources and the ability to cross reference sighting.
