Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paper and pencil
  • Data sets
  • Step 1:
Gather the information. Look for data sets that need to show frequency. Use data sets such as how many people like a certain ice cream flavor or how many people have which pets in a household.
  • Step 2:
Assemble and sort the data into a workable format, and then create and label a chart to help you organize the list.
  • Step 3:
Determine a scale. Often a scale consists of labels that aren't numbers such as the type of pets or ice cream flavors a household likes. If the scale consists of numbers, break it into even parts. If you use a numeric scale, this usually begins at the lowest number and ends at the highest number in the data set.
  • Step 4:
Draw a horizontal line and label it according to the scale you chose. This is similar to a number line.
  • Step 5:
Put an X that corresponds to the number on the scale according to the data. For example, your number line would have the labels dogs or cats as pets. If seven people had dogs, you'd place seven X's above dogs. If three people had cats, you'd put three X's above cats. The total would be ten people, thus ten X's altogether.

Tips & Warnings

  • Research line plots in a statistics math book first to get a good idea on what a line plot should look like.
