Instructions

  • Step 1:
Lay your dog on his side. You can either massage this back leg and then have him roll over to massage the other back leg or you can do the full massage on the first side and then have him roll over to the full massage on the other side. Older or injured dogs are better off with less movement.
  • Step 2:
Kneel behind the dog's back with your hands stretched over his body. This gives you the best angle and access to your dog's body.
  • Step 3:
Wrap one hand around your dog's back leg. Stretch his leg all the way out and run your hand from the hip region all the way down to the paw. This is a slow motion that lengthens the leg, relaxes the dog and prepares the leg for massage. Repeat three to five times or until the dog pulls away.
  • Step 4:
Move into the sponge squeeze. Hold your dog's "thigh" with both hands and squeeze gently. This action resembles the squeeze of a sponge. Slowly squeeze in and then slowly squeeze out. Repeat the squeezes seven to ten times.
  • Step 5:
Walk your hands down to your dog's knee. Bend the knee inward towards his body so his leg is against his belly. Point and flex his leg, from the knee down to his paw, up and down. Repeat the point and flex five times.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have your dog lie on a dog bed or other soft spot for his massage. If your dog is small enough, your lap works as well.
