Instructions

  • Step 1:
Understand that the time it takes to muzzle train a dog varies by dog and depends on your consistency and the temperament of the dog. Work with your dog and try not to rush the process if the dog is resistant as you train.
  • Step 2:
Choose the right muzzle to use on your dog as you train to ensure the comfort of your dog. If your dog isn't comfortable, he won't like the muzzle. Two styles of muzzles--the nylon and basket styles--are the most popular. The basket style of dog muzzle allows for the dog to pant, drink water and receive treats. The nylon style affords little room for panting, but treats can be slipped into an opening.
  • Step 3:
Make the muzzle a positive thing in your dog's life. Show the muzzle to your dog with enthusiasm and allow him to sniff at it. Reward any positive attention your dog shows the muzzle with praise.
  • Step 4:
Place a well-liked treat in the bottom of the muzzle to encourage your dog to put his nose in the muzzle. Reward and praise the dog while he wears the muzzle when he doesn't show resistance. Remove the muzzle and show no emotion towards the dog for at least 3 minutes. This helps the dog to associate positive praise when he wears the muzzle. Repeat this process until the muzzle becomes second-nature to the dog.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never muzzle a dog for the first time without showing him the muzzle first in a positive experience. If you only muzzle a dog when something bad is going to happen, he associates the muzzle with negative experiences and resistance occurs.
  • Avoid removing the muzzle from your dog if he tries to take the muzzle off himself. This encourages future episodes of resistance to the muzzle.
