How to Not Waste Money at the Vet

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Keep your pet healthy. Feeding a vet recommended balanced diet can help to keep your pet healthy and avoid a lot of chronic health conditions that lead to frequent trips to the vest.
  • Step 2:
Compare prices when choosing a vet. Just like doctors for humans, different vets charge different rates for the same procedure. Call a few area vets and ask for prices on standard procedures to make a comparison and not waste money.
  • Step 3:
Get the best price possible when buying medications. Ask your vet if there is a generic version of the medicine available. Call some local pharmacies to see if they would be able to fill your prescription and what the cost is. Check on the Internet for price comparisons.
  • Step 4:
Bring your pet to the vet for annual check ups. Being proactive with your pet's health care can sometimes catch problems before they become costly complications.
  • Step 5:
Take care of some of your pet's needs yourself. Ask your vet to show you how to brush your dogs teeth, clip his nails and clean his ears. Why waste money paying the vet to do them?
  • Step 6:
Find out if that annual vaccination is really needed. The Animal Hospital Association recently chanced their recommendation on several of the annual vaccinations recommending they only be done once every three years to avoid over vaccination.
  • Step 7:
Consider purchasing pet health care insurance only if your pet has a chronic condition. If your pet is healthy then health insurance would be waste of money; however if your pet has health problems that keep you running to the vet, health insurance might be cost effective.
