Learn How to Obedience Train a Pet Dingo

  • Step 1:
Recognize that only young dingoes respond well to obedience training. In fact, you stand a much better chance of success if you obtain your pet dingo before it reaches the age of 10 weeks.
  • Step 2:
Note that it isn't impossible to obedience train an older dingo. However, this requires special handling and skilled treatment of the animal. One reason for this is that dingoes lack a history of being domesticated and can easily revert to former behavior dictated by genetics, which is to wander, hunt and become territorial.
  • Step 3:
Understand that your pet dingo will mature to become an independent thinker. This doesn't mean he will refuse to obey your wishes, but his genetic markings make him prone to stubbornness and a problem solving ability to get what he wants. It's actually these traits that has enabled the dingo to survive in the wild, despite the attempt by some to eradicate the breed as "verminutes."
  • Step 4:
Never attempt to obedience train your pet dingo without a leash, unless your yard is completely surround by high fencing (dingoes can climb short fences). Even a tame dingo that has been part of the family for years will escape to the wild if given the chance.
  • Step 5:
Be firm and consistent when you obedience train your pet dingo, but be gentle. While dingoes rarely become aggressive, harsh reprimand, yelling or jerking of the leash will only result in making the dog fearful of you.
  • Step 6:
Reward positive behavior with verbal praise and a treat. In fact, you should keep some kibble in your pocket during each obedience training session for this purpose.
  • Step 7:
Don't give up. If you find your attempt to obedience train your pet dingo overwhelming, then get professional help. Find a local obedience trainer in your area willing to work with you and your pet dingo, possibly in a group of domesticated dogs to improve socialization skills at the same time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get professional help if you decide to adopt and obedience train a pet dingo older than a few months. Dingoes do not adapt or socialize well when they change owners or environmental surroundings.
