How to Participate in a Rodeo

Step 1:
Decide in which event you want to compete. For men, there's bull riding, bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling team roping and saddle bronc riding. For women can compete in barrel racing and breakaway calf roping. Some rodeos have goat tying and pole bending for women also. Learn the rules for each event.
Step 2:
Prepare yourself and your horse (if one is needed for your event) by practicing months in advance. A few weeks is enough for you and your horse to learn an event, but more time helps you both become better. Both of you need to be in good condition because rodeo events are hard on you and your horse.
Step 3:
Find a rodeo to compete in weeks in advance of the actual event. Look for rodeos in your local paper, bulletin boards at feed stores and veterinary clinics and on websites for rodeo associations.
Step 4:
Contact the rodeo event coordinator to sign up for the rodeo. Many rodeos take early entries at a lower rate than if you sign up the day of the rodeo. Be sure to follow any instructions closely. Some rodeos may require you to be at the rodeo at certain times to sign in.
Step 5:
Follow all guidelines and rules for the rodeo. Most rodeos have a dress code for the contestants. You must wear a cowboy hat and boots, jeans and a long-sleeved shirt in most cases. If these rules are not followed, you can be disqualified.
Step 6:
Be ready for your event ahead of time. Some rodeos let you know in what order your name will be called, while others just call the names during the event. Be prepared to be first every time.
