Instructions

  • Step 1:
Prepare your dog early. Show leads are unlike regular collars and leashes in that they are thin and the collar sits high under the dog's throat and behind his ears. Give your dog time to grow accustomed to the sensation.
  • Step 2:
Work with your dog to ensure he can perform to the judge's exacting standards in the show ring. The quality of the handler's equipment must be just as exemplary as the dog's behavior.
  • Step 3:
Decide which collar and leash you prefer. The most common choices are a snake chain and a martingale. Both give excellent control for steering and guiding your show dog.
  • Step 4:
Choose a snake chain if you prefer a wire-linked chain. To form the collar, thread the chain through one hoop until both hoops meet. One type of snake chain is made with the leash attached, while the other is be used with any leash you prefer.
  • Step 5:
Select a martingale for a combination leash and collar. Also called slip leads, they are made of either nylon or leather. With a slight pressure on the leash, the two slides of the collar pull together to fit snugly around the dog's neck, which provides good control.
