How to Pick a Good Bird Vet

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Pick an avian veterinarian from the member list of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) (see Resources below). The list contains active members from around the world who place a high emphasis on treating birds.
  • Step 2:
Check for certification in avian practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (see Resources below). One of the requirements for certification is a minimum of 6 years of avian-practice experience or a formal residency covering the care and treatment of birds.
  • Step 3:
Contact the local zoo and ask for names of vets who provide good care for exotic birds. You also can join a local bird club, and get names of vets with good records of treating exotic pets. Most vets who treat exotic animals include birds of all types in their areas of expertise.
  • Step 4:
Tour a prospective avian vet's facility, and look for a bird-friendly atmosphere. There should be incubator cages and a scale for weighing tiny birds in grams. The facility should also have a room separated from the cats, dogs and other animals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't wait until you have a sick bird to find a vet. Bird specialists, or avian veterinarians, are hard to find in some areas.
