How to Prepare for Home Foreclosure as a Pet Owner

Instructions

  • Step 1:
    Allow yourself enough time to find a pet-friendly residence, at least six weeks in advance if possible. There are realtors that specialize in pet-friendly properties, as well as websites that list pet-friendly rentals. Local apartment guides designate which properties allow pets and your local Humane Society may also be able to provide you with a list of apartment communities in the area that allow pets.
  • Step 2:
    Gather proof that you’re a responsible pet owner for your new landlord. This can include documentation from previous landlords and neighbors attesting to the fact that you are a conscientious pet owner, as well as copies of veterinary records showing ongoing pet care.
  • Step 3:
    If the description of a property you are interested in states “no pets allowed,” that doesn’t necessarily mean you should give up on it; there is always the chance the landlord or manager may decide on a case-by-case basis or after meeting you and your pet in person (see Resources below).
  • Step 4:
    Once you have permission from your new landlord or property manager to have a pet, be sure to get it in writing. Comprehensive agreements protect you, the landlord, the pet and the property.
  • Step 5:
    If you are experiencing financial trouble, look for ways to save money on veterinary bills and other pet expenses without skimping on quality of care (see links to my articles in Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • If you absolutely have to give up your pet(s) and can't find them another home, the Humane Society of the United States suggests bringing them to a local animal shelter or rescue. The shelter or rescue can at least provide food and safety while they try and locate a new home.
  • Abandoning a pet is not only inhumane and irresponsible, but also illegal.
  • Never assume that someone else will find your pet(s) if you leave them behind at the house. Dogs will become dehydrated within 24 hours without water and could die within a few days in extreme heat.
