How to Prevent a Cat From Chewing Electrical Cords

  • Step 1:
Cats love to play. Keeping them away from electrical cords could be as easy as keeping some cat toys around.
  • Step 2:
If possible, hide cords from cats. This can be done by placing cords under furniture and rugs. Be aware that some cats will wiggle under furniture or into tight spaces.
  • Step 3:
Another great way to hide cords is to purchase cord covers. Covers are relatively cheap, and easy to use. The covers not only protect your cat, but they help keep your cords organized. It can also keep cords from getting tangled, and are a must for homes with young children.
  • Step 4:
Bitter Apple Spray, made by Grannicks, costs about $30 for a bottle. Simply spray the cord and cats will keep away. It works because the spray smells bad and tastes horrible to cats. The spray is harmless to cats. You may have to reapply the spray from time to time because it tends to fade.

Tips & Warnings

  • Luckily, some cats will grow out of the chewing stage. But, others will always long for that perfect chomp.
  • Many cat lovers will use a spray bottle filled with water for training. This isn’t such a good idea when cats are close to an electrical outlet because it could cause an electrical hazard.
