How to Promote a One Woman Show

By Ryn Gargulinski

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Step 1:
Print up some flyers and a press release about your show. Make sure you include times, dates and location, how much it costs and why people should come see it. “The show is so dang funny it will make your sides slip open. But don’t worry, we have buckets handy.”
  • Step 2:
Visit all the local bookstores, especially feminist ones, spas, gyms, cafes and other area merchants who might be interested in letting you paste a flyer to their front window or bulletin board.
  • Step 3:
Fax or email your press release to all the local media, following it up with a phone call to make sure they got the release and ask when they will run the release or mention it in their broadcast.
  • Step 4:
Email an announcement to all your friends, relatives, past professors, people you met in acting auditions and poetry readings and anyone else you can think of.
  • Step 5:
Assess the topic and the fact that it’s a one woman show and figure out additional places you can spread the word. If it’s a show about how your mother’s cooking saved your life, go to all the diners, especially those named “Mom’s.” If it’s about your dog, go to all the area vets, pet stores, kennels, dog parks and let the trainers know.
