How to Purchase a UV Sterilizer for Aquariums and Ponds

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Compare low-pressure sterilizers to high-pressure models. Low-pressure sterilizers produce enough wavelengths to kill more organisms than high-pressure models. They tend to last longer and are available in many different styles.
  • Step 2:
Match your sterilizer to your problem. Some sterilizers control algae better while others control parasites. Check with manufacturer's recommendations on product boxes to see what the UV sterilizer can control.
  • Step 3:
Determine if you need an inline or a hang-on UV sterilizer. Inline UV sterilizers connect directly into the filtration system. Hang-on sterilizers attach to the back of the aquarium. Hang-on sterilizers are easier to use and clean but usually use low-watt bulbs that aren't as effective.
  • Step 4:
Determine your need for a UV sterilizer. With proper maintenance and filtering, the average indoor aquarium doesn't need a UV sterilizer. Ponds have a greater tendency to turn green and fill with algae. UV sterilizers can be the answer to those algae problems.
