Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Kitten replacer
  • Syringe and baby nurser
  • Solid food (mixed vegetables, meal worms, fruit and eggs)
  • Litter box and non-clumping cat litter
  • Collar and leash
  • Step 1:
Breed the fennecs. Fennecs breed from February through March and the females gestate for 50 to 52 days. Buy the highest quality breeding pair that you can afford and give them excellent care to ensure you have healthy, well bred kits.
  • Step 2:
Whelp the kits. Provide a large breeding pen where the fennecs can hide their kits. Remove the kits from the breeding foxes when they are two or three days old, but be careful to avoid the male. He might attack you in order to protect the kits.
  • Step 3:
Feed the kits. Use kitten replacer formula (available from your vet) to feed the kits with a syringe initially and eventually replace it with a baby nurser. By the time the kits are fifteen days old, you can begin to introduce solid food.
  • Step 4:
Vaccinate the kits. Find a veterinary who works with exotic animals to vaccinate your foxes. They will need Parvo and Distemper vaccines.
  • Step 5:
Train the kits. Fennec foxes can be litter trained, leash trained and trained to retrieve. Spending time every day training the kits will also help socialize them.
  • Step 6:
Sell the fennecs. Advertise your kits online and in exotic pet magazines. If you develop a reputation for breeding healthy, well socialized fennecs, you will also develop a waiting list for your beautiful kits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never disturb your fennecs when they are whelping. If they cannot move or hide their kits, they may even eat them.
