How to Register a Thoroughbred Foal

By eHow Sports & Fitness Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Research the parents of your thoroughbred foal. You must have this information handy when proceeding with the registration process. Without the information on the parents of your thoroughbred foal, it's virtually impossible to register. If you purchased the horse, contact the previous owner and request specific information on the lineage of the thoroughbred foal.
  • Step 2:
Contact the governing body for the specific breed of horse to ask for registration information. You can find links to breed and discipline organizations on the Horse Worldwide website. From the homepage of the site, click "Breed & Discipline Org." to see the list of links.
  • Step 3:
Follow the instructions given by the governing body. Depending on the breed and lineage, the registration process will vary. You may have to show proof of how the horse was conceived or provide samples for DNA testing. Some breeds aren't registered until a certain age, while other breeds can be registered as soon as the horse is born.
  • Step 4:
Name your thoroughbred foal by the guidelines given to you by the breed's governing body. Some breeds require a combination of the parents' names. If you don't properly name your thoroughbred foal, that could hinder the registration process.
  • Step 5:
Obtain approval from your breed's governing body that your thoroughbred foal was registered properly. The most common reason a registration is denied is a problem with the name. In that case, rename your thoroughbred foal and attempt to reregister.
