How to Repel Fleas Naturally

  • Step 1:
Sweep your house is with a good canister-type vacuum, at least once or twice a week. Sweeping your pet's sleeping area every day and changing their bedding a couple of times a week will also help in controlling pests and odors. Make sure you sweep in corners and crevices. Don't forget to sweep your furniture as well.
  • Step 2:
Mix five drops of lavender essential oil and warm water in a pint-size spray bottle. Spray on pet's bedding, carpet and furniture. Lavender is very aromatic and is known to for its relaxing properties.
  • Step 3:
Pennyroyal herb can also be used, but be extremely cautious. Pennyroyal oil has been known to cause abortions and miscarriages in dogs and cats. If you choose to use it in spite of the risks, try it in a tea form. Boil 16 ounces of water and add 2 teaspoons of pennyroyal herb. Let steep for 20 minutes or so. Strain and store in a tightly capped glass jar. When ready to use, fill a spray bottle 1/4 to 1/2 full with tea. Fill the rest of the way with water. Shake well. Spray on your pet before they go outside and before they come back in.
  • Step 4:
Use a flea comb on your pet frequently, especially at bath time. If you comb them during the bath, the fleas will land in the water and drown.
  • Step 5:
Sprinkle salt around your house and doorways. Crawling insects don't like to step around in it and will avoid it, if possible.
  • Step 6:
If your pet can tolerate it, add Brewer's yeast to their diet. It makes them an unpleasant host to feed on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch your pet for allergic reactions. If you notice excessive itching or redness, you have to try something else.
  • Consult with your vet.
  • Don't use pennyroyal in any form around pregnant or breeding animals.
