How to Save Money on Pet Health Care

By Tricia Goss

Instructions

  • Step 1:
In the market for a new pet? Consider adopting a pound puppy (or kitty)! Purebred pets are prone to health problems from generations of inbreeding. Exotic pets have a high price tag to begin with, and finding a specialist to care for them can cost a pretty penny.
  • Step 2:
Feed your pet a healthy diet. Cats should not eat people's food at all, and dogs should be limited as well. Stay away from cheaper pet foods, too. Even though they might save a bit upfront, they tend to be full of artificial fillers that can cause health problems.
  • Step 3:
Keep your pet's teeth clean. Start by brushing them regularly at home. Give your dog safe bones to chew on. Have your vet check your pet's teeth regularly. Dental disease can end up being toxic and even killing your precious pet.
  • Step 4:
Consider pet health insurance. Ask your veterinarian for his recommendation, and do your research. Between expected check-ups and unforeseen emergencies, it can save you a bundle.
  • Step 5:
Love your pet. By paying lots of attention to your pooch or mouser, you will be more likely to notice any ailments early on and nip them in the bud. Besides, affection keeps us all healthier.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pets love to be massaged, and it's great for their joints.
  • Many seemingly harmless foods can be toxic to pets, including chocolate, onions, raisins and even ham. Your best bet is to stick with pet food.
