How to Select A Rescue to Volunteer With

By cowgirljenn

Instructions

  • Step 1:
First, think about what you want to do for a rescue. Rescues need foster homes, people to volunteer at the facility to feed animals and clean up after them, people to help at fundraisers and more. No matter what your skill - a rescue can probably put you to work. They need accountants and book-keepers, graphics artists, web designers and so much more.
  • Step 2:
Think carefully about how much time you can commit. Everyone is busy with families, animals, and jobs they have to put first. Look at your schedule and see how much time you can reasonably commit. Don't overextend yourself.
  • Step 3:
Locate a rescue to volunteer with (See How to Select a Rescue).
  • Step 4:
Once you've screened the rescues and narrowed your list down to those you might like to work with, call or email the rescue and ask to speak to the volunteer coordinator. Honestly explain your skills, available time and desire to help the rescue. Ask about volunteer opportunities and training opportunities.
  • Step 5:
Work with the volunteer coordinator to find your niche in the rescue.
  • Step 6:
Once you begin volunteering, if you find yourself unable to fulfill your volunteer responsibilities, let the rescue know so that they can find someone else.

Tips & Warnings

  • Not all rescues operate the same, that's why it is so important to screen any rescues before committing yourself to a volunteer role.
