Instructions

  • Step 1:
Research the type of dog you want. Check the Internet or read books so that you know exactly what you are buying. Researching the breed will also help you ask the right questions.
  • Step 2:
Make sure the breeder is a pure bred breeder. Ask for references. Meet owners of dogs bought from the breeder. Check if the breeder belongs to a breed club.
  • Step 3:
Ensure that you see both parents. You want to make sure both parents are purebred dogs. Both parent dogs should be certified pure bred dogs. Look at the pups' certification papers and registration forms.
  • Step 4:
Ask how old the puppies will be when given away. Dogs should remain with their mothers until they are at least seven or eight weeks old. Make sure the dogs have had their shots. Ask for vet papers showing dates of shots. Make sure the dogs don't have worms.
  • Step 5:
See the whole facility and all the buildings. You want to make sure it's not a puppy mill. Make sure the grounds are clean and the puppies and parents are healthy.
  • Step 6:
Ask other people if they know good breeders. Word of mouth is a great way to find a reputable breeder.
  • Step 7:
Sign a contract or adoptions papers when you buy a dog at a breeders. Make sure you read all the fine print. The price should reflect the breed. If the dog is too cheap, beware.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow your instincts. Most breeders breed for the love of the breed, not for the money.
